Great Soča Gorge (Velika korita): when is it sunny? A visitor’s light guide

The Great Soča Gorge (Velika korita Soče) is in direct sun around the middle of the day: roughly 10:30–14:47 in October and 10:14–13:03 in December, and from soon after sunrise (06:14) to 19:30 in June. Come late morning for sunlit water, or early for soft light and fewer people.

Sunreach is a 3D and AR sun tracker for iPhone and iPad, coming soon to the App Store. This guide describes the current app; planned upgrades are listed separately. Terrain coverage varies by location.

When does the sun shine into the Great Soča Gorge?

From late spring to late summer the sun reaches the gorge soon after sunrise and stays until early evening (07:19–19:11 on 21 August). From October to March it gets only a midday window, as short as 2 h 50 min in December.

Times are for the 21st of each month in 2027, local time (CET in winter, CEST in summer), at a point in the gorge (46.3365° N, 13.6445° E). They come from 2 m lidar terrain of the slopes around the gorge.

What is the best time of day to visit?

For sunlit turquoise water, late morning to early afternoon, when the sun is high enough to reach into the gorge. For soft, even light and fewer people, early morning, while the gorge is still in shade.

Midday is also when most visitors arrive, so the bridge and the path along the gorge are busiest then. In summer the gorge is in sun already at 06:14, which makes an early visit sunny as well.

Is there sunrise or sunset light in the gorge?

No. In 2027 the sun never reaches the gorge while it is low and golden (below 6°): it rises and sets behind the slopes, so golden light shows on the peaks above the valley, not on the water.

For warm evening light in the valley, the open fields around Bovec get a few minutes of it on many evenings (see sun times for Bovec), and golden hour in the mountains explains why gorges miss it.

Where is the Great Soča Gorge?

On the Soča river in Triglav National Park, Slovenia, beside the Bovec–Vršič road about 11 km from Bovec, near the turn to the Lepena valley. The gorge is about 750 m long, a few metres wide and 15 m deep.

Those figures are from the Soča Valley tourist board, which also notes that the gorge can be seen from a marked footpath, that boating through it is not allowed, and that viewpoints are slippery or icy in wet and cold months.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Great Soča Gorge worth visiting in winter?

Yes, but expect shade for most of the day: in December direct sun reaches it only about 10:14–13:03. Paths can be icy; the tourist board advises against exposed viewpoints in cold months.

What time is the water most turquoise?

The colour is strongest with sun on the water, which in the gorge means roughly 10:30–14:47 in October and most of the day in summer. In shade the light is softer and more even for photos.

Can you swim in the Great Soča Gorge?

The tourist board describes people swimming in the icy water at the end of the gorge in hot weather. Boating through the gorge itself is not allowed for safety reasons.
